Yesterday was the first snow for Fort Collins and the snowy grayness had me drinking herbal tea in my chilly office and searching for the right music for such a day (must have been the same kind of day for Alycia ;-) ). While a cover album of classic country songs might not be everyone's "comfort" music, for a girl raised on nothing but 70's and 80's country, it struck the right chord. I'm talking about Rosanne Cash's new album, The List. When she told her father (you may have heard of him, Johnny Cash?) that she wanted to be a country singer, he wrote her a list of songs that she must know before pursuing such a career. On this album, she plays some of the songs from the list and brings in some excellent duets - Bruce, Rufus, Neko, Elvis and Jeff T. I don't know how much longer it will be up, but you can stream the whole album on NPR's First Listen. I'm not always a huge fan of cover albums, but I love the premise of this one and there's pretty much nothing that Rosanne Cash could do to offend me. Not even the 80's clothes in this sweet video of Rosanne and some other famous ladies performing one of my all-time favorites - Seven Year Ache.
