HOLD STEADY "Heaven is Whenever"

Just picked this up and it is well worth it for Boss fans, which I know a lot of you guys are.

I like this one.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel. I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. - Hunter S. Thompson

Steve Martin

Last night I saw Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. Here are some things I thought about during the concert in mostly chronological order:

1. Steve Martin is really funny. He was basically playing a bluegrass show with stand up breaks. The jokes were genuine. I laughed because they were funny, not because Steve Martin was telling them.

2. This is a really good show.

3. Steve Martin rips on banjo. He is a bona fied player. The Steep Canyon Rangers are a great band that he met in North Carolina and it is cool to see this old timey sort of pairing of an established band with a big name. It was fun and their was a great rapport between Steve Martin and the band.

4. It is great to see someone who was good at something honestly trying to be good at something else. Steve Martin didn't ham it up. He cared about being a good musician and wasn't a half-assed or decent musician who was relying on his stardom to bring the audience the rest of the way. It was good to see someone work hard to entertain you.

5. It felt good to be in the same room as an icon. Steve Martin isn't someone I ever thought I would be in a room with, no matter what kind of room.

6. Steve Martin looks and stands like John Darnielle.

More Whole Albums

Oh, here is the new Hold Steady album or the new Broken Social Scene album. Not that you have to decide on one or the other. Listen to both!

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM

Stream the new album from their website.

Oh boy, is LCD Soundsystem a good band. They make mature dance music, I guess you could class it as IDM. Sounds of Silver, their last album, was really fantastic and made you want to move your ass to a lot of songs about what it means to get older and have your relationships with friends and lovers change. It makes you sweat in a whole number of different ways.

I also want to take this moment to bask in the glory that is the fact that I got tickets to Sunday of Pitchfork Music Fest so that I can go see Pavement (forget basking, I'm just bragging). I know Nick and Alycia didn't like the festival so much last year because of something called "sound quality," but that is mostly because they are 30 some odd year old babies. Also, Pavement is a fucking game changer. Sure, this is the age or reunion tours, but this is the first time I'll ever get a chance to see a band that I was so disappointed in the prospect of never seeing play music that it hurt.

Mix Up Your Friends

Hey Everyone,

Here is a nice little mix that Jesse, the drummer from Daredevil Christopher Wright, sent around.

MIX!

It is worth the small amount of your time that it will take to download and listen to it. The actual download link is the bit with the bouncing red arrow to the left of it that says "Download link: Mix.zip" There are a shit load of other buttons on there that say "download" but don't be distracted. Just concentrate and GET THERE!

One guy from the mix, Conrad Plymouth, is from Milwaukee and will be playing at the Memorial Union here in Madison this Friday with Peter Wolf Crier, from Minneapolis, who whole bunches of people are in love with right now. I'd get down to Conrad Plymouth any old time. I'm not sure how I feel about Peter Wolf Crier, but their drummer is Brian Moen from the Laarks and he's awful good. I'd get down to Brian Moen doing any old thing any old time.

Has anyone posted about The Dutchess and the Duke yet? Because we should all be listening to more of that:
