Social Suicide

Sometimes I find myself embarrassed to say I like a particular band or a particular song. Like the time you were on a first date in college and Journey came on the radio. You would change the station quickly and state, "Who wants to listen to that?!" But, deep inside, you really wanted to crank the song up as high as it would go and sing at the top of your lungs. When you finally did the latter, that was the person you ended up staying with and ultimately marrying. Anyways, I like this song. I'll admit it. From American Idol's Phillip Phillips....... I saw The Lumineers this summer. They opened up for Old Crow Medicine Show, and they were really good. Now, their music is in every commercial that comes on television it seems. I constantly hear, "how lame...these guys totally sold out" or "if I hear that song one more time, I'm going to kill myself." Obviously, I have some friends that are melodramatic. Anyways, I like these guys and I like their music. And, maybe, just maybe, because many of you don't have cable, this may be something new.....probably not.

Random Train of Thought

Nick and I were watching "Bored to Death" last night, which stars Jason Schwartzman. Because he stars in some of Wes Anderson's films, it reminded me of a song that Nick and I recently heard while filing through his dad's old vinyl collection (The Rolling Stone's 2000 Man). Bottle Rocket is one of my all-time favorite Owen Wilson/Wes Anderson flicks, and it features this song. And a couple of songs from Jason Schwartzman's band, Coconut Records. My brother and I have both posted the West Coast video before, but I'm posting it again because it reminds me of my Mark Gonzales skateboard and Beastie Boys "Aloha, Mr. Hand" t-shirt.

Shovels & Rope

Shovels and Rope played at a small venue in c'ville a few weeks ago, The Southern. It's one of those venues that you feel lucky to have seen a band before anyone else has heard of them. You know the ones. I wasn't able to make the show, but my friend Kim was there. I'll see if she can comment. This band is out of Charleston, SC. And, they're coming out with a documentary?

Yet Again

I haven't heard the album in its entirety, but this new song from Grizzly Bear is good.

C'ville Music Scene

I've been living in c'ville for a couple of years now. In relation to the size of the town, it's got a pretty incredible music scene. So, here's a song from The Infamous Stringdusters, a local favorite band and a video with lots of views of town. They also host a festival nearby in the fall every year, the Festy. Worth a visit, perhaps? You'll see Tom Daly's name splashed across a lot of stuff from The Stringdusters. If you like putting music pictures/art on your walls, he's worth checking out. You'll see his work displayed at the local eatery, Positively 4th St. Next, the Sons of Bill. They filmed this video in another popular eating spot, the Blue Moon Diner. They've got an amazing vinyl collection, which you catch a glimpse of here and there. And, I learned of these guys while eating brunch at the Blue Moon one day. Advertised as a cross between Gillian Welch and The Be Good Tanyas. Sold! We also have a great local radio station, WNRN. I recommend subscribing to their YouTube channel. You can also stream the station live (www.wnrn.org). Anyways, you can hear stuff like this:

Paper Bird and Johnny Hickman

I got lucky enough to be dragged down to the Aggie on Saturday to catch the band Paper Bird.  They are really good!  Three female vocalists (one also plays trumpet) and a four piece band with an old-timey sound with great harmonies and lyrics.  Their last album was a project with the Ballet Nouveau in Denver where they wrote songs that had choreographed dance numbers.  There are even some Daily Dance Episodes on youtube that are both cute and funny.  I haven't found anything of their's I haven't liked yet.

Slow, Slow in studio

And for something completely different, Johnny Hickman, current Loveland resident and Cracker guitar player, put out a new solo album this summer called Tilting produced by Jason Larson of The Piggies.  It has a very Beatles-esque production which works great with the new Hickman songs.

He put out a video for a couple of the songs, one I really like called Drunkard's Epiphany that was shot at Lucky Joe's.

And here is a live one from his first album, Palmhenge, with the Piggies backing:

Hope you enjoy!

Do people still read this? Probably not....

So, I haven't posted anything in a long time and thought I would start back. That is, at least more often than once a year. What to post? How about the Alabama Shakes? I heard them on the radio this morning. And because I do live in Virginia now......a new ditty from Old Crow Medicine Show.
