A First

I decided to make a playlist on YouTube for the first time. The primary reason being that I couldn't pick just one video. Anyways, Alex introduced me to these guys several years ago, and I've loved them ever since. I've tried to see them live on several occasions, and for some reason or another, couldn't make a show. But, I recently found out that they were playing at the House of Blues here in Chicago on my birthday. I'm assuming that some mystical force kept me from seeing them for so many years so that there would be some "significance" behind me turning 32. Anyways, enjoy. *If the video below says there are errors, try this.

The Avett Brothers also put together a playlist of their favorites that I thought some of you would also like to see.

theFREEhoudini

Here is a link for a free download of a great mix tape. Themselves are DoseOne and Jel from Subtle and 500 other Anticon bands. The big story about DoseOne is that he is a great rapper. He comes out of a battle rap background and one time ended up across the arena from Eminem and beat him. Beat the god damned pants off the dude and later finds out that a bunch of Eminem's rhymes were pre-written.

The guest list on this thing is impressive.

Also check out Subtle. They made 3 albums that follow this super convoluted story about Our Hero Fool. I love concept albums and this is high, high concept. Subtle just had to break up because most of the guys in the band had to find a way to make money, but if you get a chance to see DoseOne in one of his other 523,209 bands due it because he is a great MC and he tells a mean joke.

Unoriginal

Sam posted this song on Facebook, and I really liked it, so I'm posting it here. For those of you who don't know Sam, he is one of very few individuals to have had a spiritual encounter with the weeping Indian. You know, the Indian that cries when he sees a piece of trash on the side of the road?

And, stolen from Grant, here is Jack White's new band: The Dead Weather.

Good Friday

What makes a good Friday better but a few free MP3s of great mellow happy music??? The kind of music that makes you wish for a sunny backyard, lawn chairs, and a few good friends toting a cooler of good beer. Below are downloads from the Sim Redmond Band - particularly popular in the Ithaca, New York area. I heard about them a couple years ago from friends who went to Cornell. I almost always throw one of their songs on when I make a mix cd for someone. Enjoy!

Colorado Bluegrass

1) Hit And Run: I was hoping to find a video for "Goin' Back to Georgia" to dedicate to Ross and Marlee, but couldn't find one. You can listen to a portion of the song here. Excuse the darkness of the video I did find.

2) Spring Creek

3) Open Road: No YouTube links, but you can watch an entire show here. Love these guys!

The Daredevil Christopher Wright

Nick and I saw these guys this past weekend in Madison. We really liked them. They have an album coming out May 19 (click title to sample a few of their songs). I'm particularly fond of "Head on My Shoulders".
